Telluride Blues and Brews 2016
HEADLINERS - Jason Isbell

Jason Isbell is a huge name here at KAFM. In fact, if you say the name "Jason" with a CD in your hand, you'll notice several ears perk up in hopes you follow it up with that "I" surname.
He's a cross-genre master of Americana, Roots, Rock, Country, and Folk and he's headlining the first night of the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival! I was fortunate to score a media-pass to that exact fest, so upon learning of my entry I walked straight back to the "I" section of the library and pulled Southeastern, Something More than Free and a few of the Drive-by Truckers albums he played on just in case.
So let's learn a little bit more about Mr. Isbell, shall we?
Growing up in Green Hill, Alabama, Jason played far too many instruments. Given a mandolin at a young age for his tiny hands to manage, he went on to play guitar and even trumpet and french horn in high school. By the time he barely crested teen-hood, he and his garage band had already played at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN. During growing-up and growing into the musician he was to become he had many mentors. One to note was David Hood, father of Patterson Hood, one of the founders of Drive-by Truckers. Isbell eventually confided to David Hood his playing and his passion for music, this turned into a friendship and mentorship that led him to expand further and resulted in him submitting demos to the renowned FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. He was given a publishing deal and worked with them until he started playing with the Drive-by Truckers in 2001 during their tour of Southern Rock Opera. In 2007 Isbell left DBT on good terms and not for lack of good reasons. That same year he put out his first solo album and took off from there. In 2014 he really proved his mettle and swept the Americana Awards with Southeastern, winning Best Album AND Best Song, "Cover Me Up." Something More Than Free had the same nominations in 2015 as well as landing high on the Billboard Rock, Country and Folk Charts.

Jason Isbell has a way about him. Whether he's playing, singing, or writing songs that mean something, Isbell has something about him that makes us feel.
That makes us remember things that matter.
It suffices to say that I am incredibly excited to see him perform at the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival in just over a week, and you can expect a lengthy, gushing write-up upon my return.
